Saarthi AI Assistant for Inclusion
In 2025, Reliance Foundation recognized a critical gap in India’s digital ecosystem: millions of elderly and differently-abled citizens were unable to access essential services due to barriers such as language, literacy, poor network connectivity, or lack of smartphones. The objective was to create an inclusive, human-centric AI solution that could empower these individuals and help them live independently with dignity.
The solution came in the form of the Saarthi AI Assistant, a multilingual, voice-first digital companion that does not require internet access or a smartphone. Saarthi was designed to work on basic feature phones and smart speakers, making it one of the most inclusive AI tools ever built in India.
Saarthi AI Assistant: What They Built
The Saarthi AI Assistant is not a typical virtual assistant. It is built specifically to cater to real-world challenges faced by rural elderly citizens and people with disabilities. Unlike other AI tools that rely on apps, screens, or English-only interfaces, Saarthi was trained to understand 11 Indian languages and dialects — including speech with slurs, tremors, or local expressions.
It was also engineered to run on minimal hardware. By using edge computing, the assistant could process most commands locally, without needing a live internet connection. This made it ideal for use in villages and low-connectivity zones.
But perhaps the most remarkable part of Saarthi’s development was its community-led training. Reliance Foundation actively involved rural elders, caretakers, and differently-abled users in designing the assistant’s features, user flows, and voice style. This made the final product highly trusted and locally relevant.
Key Features
The Saarthi AI Assistant offers a robust set of features that are simple yet life-changing:
Medication Reminders
Saarthi speaks aloud reminders for users to take their daily medication, along with short wellness messages. For people with memory loss or cognitive delays, this feature dramatically improved health compliance.
Pension & Banking Assistance
Users can ask Saarthi to help them check pension status, balance updates, or guide them through simple banking services. It provides spoken responses in local languages, making it accessible even to illiterate users.
Daily Well-Being Check-ins
Saarthi calls users daily at a fixed time to check if they’re okay. If there is no response after three attempts, an automated alert is sent to a family member, caretaker, or local health worker. This feature has directly helped in emergency response situations.
Job Matching for Differently-Abled
Differently-abled users can tell Saarthi about their skills or preferences, and the assistant connects them to verified remote job opportunities, NGO-led training programs, or state government schemes.
2025 Results
The impact of the Saarthi AI Assistant in just one year has been extraordinary:
| Key Metric | Outcome |
| Active Users | 3.5 million elderly + 1.2 million differently-abled |
| Missed Medication Reduction | 48% fewer missed doses |
| Emergency Alerts Triggered | Over 25,000 elderly assisted in real time |
| Job Placements via Voice | 18,000 differently-abled matched with jobs |
Notably, 90% of users reported increased confidence in managing their daily routines after using Saarthi for three months. The assistant also saw a 98% accuracy rate in recognizing local dialects after training with over 20,000 real Indian voices.
Why it Stands Out
The success of the Saarthi AI Assistant lies in its simplicity and empathy. Unlike most high-tech innovations that require advanced devices or strong connectivity, Saarthi was designed from the ground up for inclusion. Here’s what makes it stand out:
- Truly Offline Functionality: It can run without internet, ensuring rural and underserved users are not left behind.
- Language Inclusivity: Trained in 11 Indian languages and dialects, it supports people who cannot read or write.
- Voice-Based Simplicity: For those with physical disabilities or vision impairment, Saarthi eliminates the need to touch or see a screen.
- Human Connection: The daily check-in calls are more than reminders—they create a sense of companionship, especially for elders living alone.
This makes Saarthi a model example of how AI can be compassionate, culturally relevant, and empowering.
Conclusion: Saarthi AI Assistant Empowers India
The Saarthi AI Assistant by Reliance Foundation is not just another tech product—it’s a lifeline for millions. By breaking down barriers of language, literacy, and access, it has redefined how AI can serve humanity.
In a country as diverse and populous as India, Saarthi proves that true digital transformation doesn’t come from screens, apps, or automation alone—it comes from understanding real people, their challenges, and building AI with a heart.
This case study highlights a powerful shift in 2025: technology designed not for the privileged few, but for the many. The Saarthi AI Assistant is not just a voice tool—it’s a symbol of empathy-driven innovation.
